Andrew MacDonald’s six-year, $30 million extensio

Unless the Philadelphia Flyers sign another defenseman for more than $5 million this summer, Andrew MacDonald will be the second-highest paid blueliner on their roster next season.

MacDonald’s freshly signed six-year,2014 winter classic jerseys, $30 million extension with the Flyers isn’t a bad deal on its own. He’s a shutdown, shot-blocking defender who plays 21-plus minutes a game in the NHL and the salary cap will be on the way up this summer. But when you add the investment in MacDonald to the other commitments Philadelphia has made on the blueline, world cup 2014 jerseys, it becomes troubling.

First of all, ,custom soccer jerseys, who has a negative Corsi relative percentage (meaning his team is better when he’s off the ice) despite being strong within his own zone. had an excellent breakdown on how MacDonald’s iffy neutral zone play negatively impacts these stats. But there’s no denying the Flyers defenseman is effective within his own zone,Toronto Maple Leafs winter classic jerseys 2014, specializing in shot blocking. This would suggest MacDonald is a serviceable player to have on the roster, but one who had been thrust into a bigger role than he’s qualified for, cheap soccer jerseys, both with the Islanders and Flyers. And now Philadelphia, a team with defense concerns, will lock him into that role by paying him as a top two or three blueliner for the next six seasons.

There’s also a legitimate health concern with MacDonald, since his primary skill (blocking shots) lends itself to bumps and bruises. So far, it hasn’t hurt MacDonald – he’s missed only seven games in the past three years. However, it’s bound to catch up with him at some point. The Flyers, already with a creaking, cracking defense corps, has now committed to a player who should be considered an injury risk for precisely the reason the team signed him for.

If MacDonald was signing on to a defense that was already well-rounded and already had at least an established and reliable top two, this contract would be palatable. MacDonald is a pretty good NHL defenseman, but he’s not a leader or a guy a Stanley Cup champion would lean on.

Consider that next season, – 30.7 percent of the cap – to five defensemen: Braydon Coburn, Mark Streit, Luke Schenn, Nicklas Grossmann and MacDonald. Slow or one-dimensional, this group has a lot of holes in it for such a large commitment. Barring a buyout or trade, this group is locked in through the 2015-16 season as well.

MacDonald is by no means a bad NHL defenseman and if $5 million is too much of a cap investment in him (against a rising cap remember), it isn’t by too much. Pending Penguins UFA Matt Niskanen has been ball-parked at around $4 to $4.5 million and may get more on the open market, so that’s right around where MacDonald would have been, too.

But for the Flyers to put this much money and term down on another defenseman who doesn’t add anything terribly unique or influential to the blueline is troubling. Their mediocre defense didn’t get any better – and they’re running out of cap room to make that happen, custom nhl jerseys.

Alessio Romagnoli The Fullback An Analysis - Chie

When it comes to primavera products, no fan base is as unrealistic with their expectations and as unrestrained with their love as Roma fans. Whether it's the eternal bond between the club, the city and the fans, or simply because Roma aren't the most profligate spenders, the fortune of these foundlings has an inordinate impact on the future of the club. This equation is magnified if the adolescent in question was born within earshot of the Olimpico.

We've said it many, many times in these spaces, but when an actual Roman suits up for this club, the consequences and rewards are amplified. Every touch and every flick from the feet of and every hard charging tackle and screamer from the boots of strikes something emotional, something eternal and something unspeakable within the hearts and minds of Romans everywhere.

You don't know why it matters; you just know that it does...a lot.

Of course, for every Totti and De Rossi, there are the Aquilani's and Cerci's; the ones who, for a variety of reasons, could not conflate the hopes of the Romans in the stands with the Romans on the pitch.

While Alessandro Florenzi appears to have the temerity, the passion and the endurance to endure life in this madhouse, today we turn our attention to the latest local boy come legend, . While he may not hail from the city proper, Romagnoli was born in the portside town of Anzio, some 85km from the Stadio Olimpico, and has spent his entire youth career in the Roma system, first earning a call up by Zdenek Zeman at only 17-years-old.

But this isn't a biography on Romagnoli, this is merely a look at a 19-year-old kid pressed into service in an unnatural position. Alessio, as we all know, is a centerback by trade--to the extent a 19-year-old can have a trade--but, due to injuries and suspensions, has been forced to play left back since coming on as a 55th minute sub against .

So,custom soccer jerseys, with only 299 minutes under his belt as a makeshift left back, let's take a look at the extremely early returns of Romagnoli the full back. As those approximate 300 minutes came across four matches, let's do a mini-dissection of each one.

First up, Samp.

February 16th: 55 minutes vs Sampdoria

Coming in for Maicon, Romagnoli--who was making only his third professional appearance--was thrust into the limelight as a leftback, so we'll focus on the manner in which he fit into the offensive flow. Besides, Roma had just gone up 2-0 when Maicon went down, so there wasn't a ton of critical defending required from anyone.

This graphic wasn't doctored, nothing was omitted; Romagnoli really was a perfect 27-for-27 passing in his first appearance of the season. Romagnoli passed forward, backwards and inwards from the flank, connecting with , and Gervinho to press an already bewildered Sampdoria defense.

There isn't much we can glean from 35 minutes on the pitch, but understand this; Romagnoli is 19, he wasn't expected to play in this match--in fact, he hadn't played at all since March of 2013--certainly not as an emergency leftback. So, give the kid credit for composure if nothing else.

Romagnoli did all that was asked of him, and he did it well; he was active, he was integral and he was accurate.

February 22nd: 90 minutes vs

Roma held sway in this match from minute one to minute ninety, so they didn't really need Romagnoli to do much other than exist; don't make any mistakes, don't take any stupid chances. Looking at his performance, Romagnoli did just that, completing 90% of his passes, creating one scoring chance, intercepting two passes and making three clearances. Solid but not spectacular.

We'll throw this one up if only to show Romagnoli flexing his fullback muscle. Compared to our previous example, Romagnoli appeared to make a more concerted effort to exploit open channels (both long and short), working the two-man game with Miralem Pjanic and even, in Totti-esque fashion, switching playing to maintain possession and keep an attack alive.

While the numbers don't overwhelm you, the space he occupied on the pitch and the nature of his passes suggests he was a bit more comfortable in the offensive role forced upon him, showing little hesitation jumping into the flow of the attack; passing and moving, holding and switching; doing whatever it takes to maintain momentum.

We've certainly seen worse performances from fullbacks down the years, right? But this was a positive step forward for Romagnoli; he wasn't hesitant, he wasn't foolish and he wasn't overwhelmed

March 1st: 90 minutes vs Inter

This match, against one of the club's most hated foes, was undoubtedly Romagnoli's finest night as a professional footballer. Romagnoli made a match high 89 touches, completed 88% of his passes, 100% of his long balls, ?made three tackles and nine clearances. He was more than up to the task on both sides of the ball against a tough opponent.

While this graphic isn't as sexy as the others (come on, you know you loved the Jackson Pollock-esque smattering of green arrows), it does show that Romagnoli has the awareness and agility to snuff out an attack pretty much anywhere on the pitch. Notice the cluster of clearances in the far corner, an area in which a temporarily converted centerback is most likely to feel awkward, but Alessio did a phenomenal job stopping Fredy Guarin, and nearly ever Inter attacker who dared stray down his flank, effectively removing that option from Walter Mazzarri's bag of tricks. He beat Inter's attackers to the ball, he closed ground and he won the aerial game; defensively speaking, you can't ask for much more from a fullback.

Again, we're talking about a teenager playing out of position in only his fifth professional appearance. We cannot understate that.

March 9th: 84 minutes vs

This, as you might recall, was not a good evening for anyone in the red kits. Roma, by most accords, should have won this match; they out moved, out possessed and simply outworked Napoli last week. However, thanks to a moment of youthful indiscretion from Romagoli, Roma surrendered three points at the San Paolo. Greater crimes have been committed in Roman history for sure, but this wasn't his finest moment, 19-years-old or not.

However, despite losing track of Jose Callejon on the game's lone goal, Romagnoli was far from derelict in his defensive duties. Roma's #46 made two tackles, two interceptions, five clearances, one blocked shot and one offside won. One look at the graphic and it's clear as day; Romagnoli was pressing further up the pitch than in prior matches, exerting the bulk of his energy on either side of the midfield. In addition to his seven clearances, Romagnoli won 75% of his headed duels, three of which, ironically, game against Callejon.

Although Roma's passing was more precise and they held the lion's share of possession, they weren't exactly bombarding the Napoli defense with an array of shots, so Romagnoli wasn't fully ingrained into the Roman attack, to the extent it even existed this night. He simply had the misfortune of making Roma's biggest mistake on this evening, soccer jerseys cheap, one which ultimately cost them the match.

Looking Ahead

If the past four weeks have shown us anything, it's that Romagnoli possesses exceptional athleticism for a centerback; he was rarely (outside of the Callejon goal) caught out of position, seldom outrun and rarely out jumped. He has the size and speed to cover ground laterally, the tactical awareness to press up the pitch and not look like a fool, while the simple fact that he's survived and looked like a passable fullback is a testament in itself.

At 19-years-old and already standing 6'2" and nearly 170lbs, Romagnoli has the makings of a prototypical centerback. He has the size, the speed and, given time, should have the strength to hold off a variety of attacking threats. Furthermore, world cup 2014 jerseys, the eagerness with which he's approached his role as a leftback should go a long way to endearing his name to a fanbase that, though they give their love unabashedly, hold duty and fealty to the crest above simple statistics.

The extremely early returns on Alessio Romagnoli are quite promising, indeed.

Sunderlands Vito Mannone outstanding at Everton, s

“Football is incredible,” he said. “You never know what’s going to happen. We had a plan to make it difficult for Everton. Everything changed with the mistake, you cannot plan that. Sometimes I like games without accident. That was one for us and we took advantage.”

With results in their favour, Everton could have gone top of the Premier League, custom soccer jerseys, albeit for two hours before the end of Manchester City’s match with Liverpool.

Roberto Martínez, world cup jerseys, the Everton manager, world cup 2014 jerseys, expressed “delight” at the attitude of his players after falling behind.

“I thought the second half was terrific,” he said. “We coped well with 10 men, put Mannone under great pressure. We didn’t get the points but performances like that will give us a lot more over the season.

“Our reaction was good, players showed incredible attitude and a great understanding to cope with a man disadvantage. My only critical aspect can have is should finish some of those chances. We will move on and I feel we’re stronger than before the game.”

Had it not been for Mannone, Everton would surely have rescued at least a point. “Even with 10 we were defending for our lives.” Poyet added. “It’s easy to see but very difficult to change. This is the best team we have played, even with just 10 men. I hope this time that it is the moment our season changes.”

Cole in trouble

To no one’s great surprise, Ashley Cole has been charged?by the Football Association (FA) over his abusive Twitter rant against the governing body.

The England international called the FA a “bunch of twats” on Friday after the FA questioned the evidence he gave in defending teammate, John Terry,Detroit Red Wings winter classic jerseys 2014, against a racism charge.

The charge by his country comes two days after confirmation by the Chelsea manager, Roberto Di Matteo, that Cole would be punished by his club.

“We’ve got a social media policy at the club and there’s going to be a disciplinary process – action – against the tweet and that’s how I’ll leave it,” the Italian said.

“The image of the club is very important to us of course. We have rules, and anybody who breaks the rules faces disciplinary action against them. We strive to have high standards and hopefully, going forward, we can be better at showing those.”

Swede is a vegetable

A broadcaster in Sweden has been banned from the press box at AIK Stockholm after he was heard referring to black players as “darkies” in a radio commentary booth.

Bo Hansson, unaware he was being broadcast, was watching AIK’s match against Gefle from the Sveriges Radio commentary position. During the commentary on the game, listeners heard a voice – later identified as Hansson’s – make several references to “darkies”.

“Bo Hansson is no longer allowed into the press box this season, what he has done is contrary to our values – we have zero tolerance for racism,” AIK managing director Thomas Edselius told newspaper Sportbladet.

Jacob Sillen, head of sport at Sveriges Radio, said in a statement: “Such comments can and should never be allowed in our broadcasts. It is deeply regrettable.”

Hansson told Sportbladet: “I was talking to myself in my corner. It was never intended to be broadcast. I had no idea.”

Oh well,Toronto Maple Leafs winter classic jerseys 2014, that’s alright then. Doubtless there’s a job waiting for him at Chelsea TV.

Goals of the day

Nigh on impossible to separate two backheeled goals from the weekend. Both were brilliant pieces of improvisation.

Firstly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s first in PSG’s 2-2 draw with Marseille.

Then there was an audacious effort from Junior Martinez in Porto’s 2-0 win over Sporting.

Quote of the day

“Madrid is a gentlemanly club and penalties not signalled cannot be talked about. This is the philosophy of the club and I must adapt to it, although I like the truth. Delgado is a good referee, but at a deciding moment of the game he made a big mistake. That can happen to anyone.”

Joe Mourinho reminds assembled journalists that Real Madrid managers don’t criticise referees, before going on to criticise the referee.

One foot in the grave

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has lambasted Brendan Rodgers’ involvement in?, the television documentary currently being aired across the United Kingdom and the United States, insisting that legendary Reds manager Bill Shankly “would be turning in his grave”.

Being: Liverpool follows the club on their preseason tour of North America in the build-up to the 2012-13 Premier League season.?? Although intended to portray the club in a positive light, the finished product does Liverpool few favours and ultimately resembles a?-style spoof.?Indeed, if Spinal Tap?could be described as a rocumentary, then?Being Liverpool should be regarded as a socumentary.

Lawrenson, who now earns a living looking bored and uninterested on the sofa while regaling viewers with a seemingly endless supply of tired gags, believes the documentary is making Rodgers look a fool and the club a laughing stock.

“What on earth is Brendan Rodgers doing in this program Being: Liverpool? I’m sorry, I just think this show comes across as American schmalz,” Lawrenson writes in his column for the Daily Mirror.

“,soccer jerseys cheap; It’s totally ill-advised and some of the stuff that I have seen so far in the first three episodes is cringe worthy.

“I think everybody shares that point of view. The problem is, once you get American owners intent on doing it and intent on getting everyone involved it’s extremely difficult.

“Well, at the moment the club isn’t doing particularly well. The soundbites are great but it’s plain for everyone to see that there is a lot wrong.”

Lawrenson suggested that a venerated trio of former managers would be turning in their graves if shown the footage.

“One other thing. The show I saw on Saturday ended up with Ian Ayre, the chief executive, cheap soccer jerseys, jumping on his Harley Davison and riding through the city,” Lawrenson wrote.

“Come on!! Shankly would be turning in his grave. So would Paisley and Fagan and all of those Liverpool legends.”

Sadly, for the Liverpool owners, the programme is competing for attention with a runaway internet sensation that portrays the club in a less-than-flattering light.

It truly is the gif that keeps on giving.

World Soccer Manager of the Year Jupp Heynckes

While the vast majority of retired workers have to make do with a watch or a clock on their send-off, Jupp Heynckes was the recipient of a far more substantial gift last spring, receiving widespread adulation and critical acclaim for his role as the architect of Bayern Munich’s perfect season, winning the Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup.

Fifteen years after steering Real Madrid to victory over Zinedine Zidane’s Juventus in the 1998 Champions League Final, “Don Jupp” had a smile as wide as the Rhine as Bayern celebrated their fifth European title, soccer jerseys cheap, at Wembley in May. And as only the fourth coach to lead two different clubs to the biggest prize in European football, his place in the record books is assured.

Cynics might suggest any reasonably competent coach could have made hay with a 2012-13 Bayern squad stacked with talent and experience, but that would be grossly unfair on the 68-year-old former Borussia Monchengladbach and West Germany front runner. Patrice Evra back in the French fold

France coach Didier Deschamps has chosen Patrice Evra in a 24-man squad to face Ukraine in their World Cup play-off.

Evra’s inclusion follows his clearance to play by the French federation, custom soccer jerseys, after he called former internationals Luis Fernandez and Bixente Lizarazu “bums” in a TV interview last month.

“I do not know what Lizarazu has against me,custom soccer jerseys,” the Manchester United defender said. “I was twice voted best left-back in the world, four times the best left-back in the Premier League. Him, I don’t even know if he was ever voted best left-back in the world.

“People have a good impression of me, it won’t be these tramps who dirty my image. They must stop lying to the French people.”

Nonetheless, Deschamps a former World Cup winner alongside Lizarazu, defended his decision to select Evra.

“He was eligible so I decided to pick him,2014 winter classic jerseys,” Deschamps told a news conference.

“I and the players are focused on a very important meeting for us. You can write whatever you want. Internally we are focused on sport.”

Quizzed on the matter by reporters, an irritable Deschamps added: “I choose on sporting criteria. You can write whatever you want.”

Which perhaps goes to show that to Evra is human, but to forgive is Deschamps.

Ronaldo backs protests, provided they are peaceful

Ronaldo, a member of Brazil’s World Cup organising committee, insists the 2014 FIFA World Cup will benefit Brazil but sympathises with those who have been protesting against the expense of staging the finals.

Soccerex, world cup 2014 jerseys, a major football convention scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro in late November, was cancelled, reportedly because of safety fears.

It comes after the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in June was overshadowed by protests, with fears there will be a repeat at the World Cup next year.

“I’m fighting for something that we are building. It is very easy for someone to be the opposition, trying to destroy from your house without believing in a project, not believing in anything and just trying to destroy it,” Ronaldo said.

“I am not doing it for myself. I am a volunteer for the World Cup, I am not earning any cents from the committee or FIFA. I am doing it because I believe in my country and in my people.

“And I believe this is a great thing for our country, a great growth opportunity for our country. So I’ll keep acting the same way, believing in my country, believing in the Brazilian people and I really hope to have an improvement in living conditions.

“I agree with all types of protest without violence, the Brazilians are so tired of the neglect that had for many years and now we are waiting for answer by government. I am doing my part, which is to have a Brazil better even if it is through sports.”

Roberto Martinez mocks Andre Villas-Boas

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is one of the more eloquent Premier League managers and the Spaniard displayed a modicum of wit when he was asked whether his striker, Romelu Lukaku, should have apologised to Spurs’ keeper, Hugo Loris, after the pair collided during Sunday’s goalless stalemate.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas Boas suggested that Lukaku had been at fault for the clash, and was disappointed the Everton man had not been in touch with the goalkeeper.

“I want to believe that Lukaku’s leg was not left late to clash into Hugo’s head,” said Villas-Boas. “I find it remarkable that nobody has actually found out if he could have avoided the goalkeeper and I am disappointed that Lukaku hasn’t contacted Hugo.

“I don’t question Lukaku’s integrity,” he added, before going on to question Lukaku’s integrity. “But I think he could have jumped over perfectly.”

Martinez responded by drawing attention to Tottenham striker Roberto Soldado, who threw an elbow into the chest of?Jagielka?and was perhaps fortunate not to be shown a red card.

?preferred to talk about the remarks he made during the game.

“After a perfectly normal challenge, Ibra turned to me and provoked me, making a joke about my moustache, saying: ‘That really is terrible,’” Kljestan told?Het Nieuwsblad.

“I responded by saying that he should think about his nose.”

Ibrahimovic has form for trying to wind up opponents during a match. In October of last year he was branded “arrogant, dirty and childish” by a player for the Faroe Islands.

“He elbowed me just before the interval and when we left the pitch for half-time I asked him what he was doing,” Faroe Islands captain Frodi Benjaminsen?said.

“Just when we got inside he grabbed hold of me … He was belittling our team and me. What he said was not nice. He talked about where he is playing and how much he is earning. It was so childish, china nhl jerseys.”

Sounds very much like Zlatan.

Reviewing Milan’s Defeat Against Manchester Unite

With the current?crop of players,?Milan were unlikely to win the Champions League as the Rossoneri have no depth, soccer jerseys cheap,?are short on alternatives in key positions and have an inexperienced Coach in Leonardo. The Brazilian Coach has been decent overall working to his best with the players available at his disposal. Against Manchester United he made a number of mistakes in terms of his selection and starting lineup as well as his substitutions.

Without taking anything away from Wayne Rooney who has been phenomenal this season, winter classic jerseys 2014,custom soccer jerseys, Milan could have easily put this match away if a few elements went there way beginning with the choice of starters. There is no point dwelling on whether the outcome would have been different if the necessary adjustments were made, but this could serve as a lesson which will help Leonardo and the Rossoneri in the future. In recent weeks, there have been rumours concerning Leonardo’s future with reports claiming he will be ousted at the end of the season if Milan have fail to overcome the English champions.

Below are some of the key points for reference following the? loss to Manchester United:

- Dida: The Brazilian goalkeeper is unworthy of playing on a team of Milan’s stature. The custodian has proven time and again he is prone to committing errors and his performances over the last several years have left a lot to be desired. Besides his customary blunders, world cup 2014 jerseys, Dida has become an obvious weak link in the Milan defense which other teams often target. With Christian Abbiati back, why did Leonardo pick Dida ahead of him? Abbiati is not flashy but certainly more reliable than Dida.

- Starting Lineup: All season long Leonardo has been reluctant to start Klaas-Jan Huntelaar except in emergency situations and he did score twice against Udinese but why start him now? Leonardo could have used Alexandre Pato as the striker upfront with support from Ronaldinho and with Clarence Seedorf starting as well. Seedorf is a seasoned veteran and has won the Champions League on three different teams (Ajax, Real Madrid and Milan) so surely he would be more worthy to start than Huntelaar even if it meant isolating Pato upfront. Still, Ronaldinho could have been pushed further upfront while Seedorf played on the left side of the midfield.

While Daniele Bonera was not a disaster but the decision to not start Ignazio Abate who has played many more games this season is quite surprising. Abate might not be the best equipped for the right-back position given it it not his natural position but his pace could have troubled Manchester United more.

One thing critics must grant Leonardo is the fact he has been consistent all season long in terms of his selections, faith in certain players and his rotation. David Beckham started on the bench the previous two games and while Beckham is a decent player, the pressure of the occasion might have gotten to him. Beckham is not exactly the player to seek in times of intense pressure as seen with England on a couple of occasions during the World Cup. No one is doubting Beckham’s experience, his work-rate or his desire to do well but he could have contributed more coming off the bench. At this point starting with either Mathieu Flamini or Gennaro Gattuso instead of Beckham would have been better.

If Leonardo wanted to have two strikers upfront why did he not use Filippo Inzaghi who is a goal poacher and nuisance for teams. Inzaghi can easily irritate defenders with his approach to the game and is a lethal finisher as his European scoring record can attest to. In certain games experience can trumpet age and current form. Huntelaar has not really impressed so starting Inzaghi would not have been a major risk.

- Substitutions: Those were quite critical as on one hand Seedorf scored a goal after coming off the bench while Inzaghi did miss a chance to score but he added another dimension to Milan’s attacks. The change which definitely hurt Milan was the introduction of Giuseppe Favalli for the injured Luca Antonini. At 38, Favalli is too old to be playing at left-back and while he was a decent player over his career, world cup jerseys, the former Lazio defender cannot be compared to the great Paolo Maldini. The legendary Maldini was used as a centre-back in the last few years of his career since the left-back position is more demanding in terms of speed and stamina. How can Leonardo use Favalli and why did he not opt for Frenchman Flamini who has placed in that position on a few occasions in the past? At least Flamini has the legs top cope with the physical demands of the position.

- Age Factor: Of the 11 starters and the 3 substitutes who featured against Manchester, 8 players were over the age of 30 and in such a competitive sport having too many older players can easily backfire, cheap nhl jerseys, in particular when there are few capable alternatives on the bench.

Considering all the factors above and the 3-2 final score, can Milan overcome the deficit and turn the tie around by winning at Old Trafford to secure a spot in the next round? Keep in mind a 1-0 win will not suffice as the away-goal rule will stand to benefit the Red Devils. Milan must score at least twice and win.

While the world obsesses over Qatar, another Gulf

Barely noticed abroad amid all the hysterical paranoia about Qatar 2022, FIFA will be staging a World Cup in the Gulf over the next three weeks.

The world championship at under-17 level is being hosted by the United Arab Emirates with no air-cooled stadia and with no howls of concern about migrant workers’ rights.

This may not be entirely unconnected with the fact that, soccer jerseys cheap, among the field of 24 countries, Europe is represented by Austria, world cup jerseys, Croatia, Italy, Russia,Toronto Maple Leafs winter classic jerseys 2014, Slovakia and Sweden i.e. FIFA-curious, media-strong nations such as England, France and Germany are all absent.

Abu Dhabi is the tournament capital. It will host the Opening Match and Final and serves as HQ for FIFA and the organisers. Matches are being played both here, up the west coast at Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al-Khaimah, on the east coast at Fujairah and inland at the oasis city of Al Ain on the border with Saudi Arabia.

Qatar, for reference, is 230 miles due west of Dubai across the Gulf ie on the same latitude and, of course, in the same climate zone.

A 24-team competition means there is no need to stage three matches in a day, as with the ‘grown-up’ 32-team World Cup. Hence games in the UAE between the Opening Match in Abu Dhabi on Thursday (Brazil v Slovakia) and the final there on November 8 are being staged at 5pm and 8pm local time.

The stadia and training camps are not air-cooled but FIFA’s medical commission has raised no objection to the concept of teenage footballers playing at full competitive tilt out in the open Gulf air at this time of year (October/November is one of the options about which Qatar speculation has circled).

This is important to note because FIFA’s medical commission has particular inside knowledge. Chairman Michel D’Hooghe has family living and working in the Gulf and medical boss Jiri Dvorak is a frequent visitor to the region.

The experience, for those players who take part, can be invaluable. Their age group means many will be back, and approaching the peak of their careers, at the World Cup in Qatar 2022.

Not that taking youth tournaments to the Gulf is anything new. Qatar hosted the World (U-20) Youth Cup in 1995 at short notice after Nigeria was dropped as host (Brazil’s winning squad included goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel who was World Cup-winning hero nine years later after the penalty shootout triumph over Italy in Pasadena).

One of FIFA’s central missions is the encouragement and development of football at grassroots (or sand-roots) level across the world and its youth tournaments play a role in both this and in the provision of an international career ladder for outstanding youngsters.

Of course the full panoply of world championships also provides FIFA’s main sponsors with visibility opportunities across the years between World Cups.

The under-17 finals have demonstrated that technically and tactically skilful football is not limited to the old power bases of Europe and South America. Of the 14 tournaments thus far Africa has won five times and Asia once. Of course, Europeans nations have often sent weakened squads because of a conflict of dates with domestic league demands.

Comparisons with prospects for Qatar are limited. Hundreds of thousands of visiting fans are not expected; indeed, even mere thousands of visiting fans are not expected.

Hence the organisers will be handing out tickets free of charge to young people across the Emirates including on a first-come first-served basis at all six host venues on match days.

They will be in at the start of some exceptional careers. Gianluigi Buffon, Iker Casillas, Alex Del Piero, Cesc Fabregas, Neymar and Ronaldinho all rose to glory, fame and fortune from the World Under-17s.

For the cost of a holiday flight, any interested fans might find the experience enlightening . . . to say nothing of the foreign media with Qatar in mind.

World Cup preview - Italy v Czech Republic World

v
Kick-off 15:00 (BST)

Group E of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Finals reaches its conclusion this afternoon with qualification still a mathematical possibility for all four teams.

Fans will be looking forward to a tense pair of matches featuring Italy, Czech Republic, Ghana and the USA.

Italy and the Czechs meeting in Hamburg this afternoon in what is the pick of the two ties. Both teams enter the match on the back of disappointing results in their previous games. Italy failed to make an extra man count against the USA in Kaiserslauten last weekend in the 1-1 draw, while the injury ravaged Czechs were comprehensively out-played by Ghana in Cologne on the same day.

Italy will be certain of qualification if they avoid defeat this afternoon, and if Ghana fail to beat the USA in the other match then the Italians could progress regardless of their result today. The meeting today will be the thirtieth between the two sides, though the vast majority of the games took place before the Czech/Slovak split, when the Czechs competed as Czechoslovakia. The Czechs have a slight edge in historic results, but the results in the six competitive matches are perfectly balanced. Both teams have two victories and two draws. The most famous meeting between the pair was the 1934 World Cup Final in Rome when Italy triumphed 2-1 after extra time.

Suspension worries
Italy coach Marcello Lippi has several suspension worries ahead of this afternoon’s match. Midfielder Daniele de Rossi will definitely miss the game after his disgraceful elbow on USA striker Brian McBride in Kaiserslauten. Compounding this problem is the fact that four players will face suspension from second round if they receive another yellow card today,2014 winter classic jerseys, and Lippi must decide whether or not to risk Mauro Camoranesi, winter classic jerseys 2014, Vicenzo Iaquinta Gianluca Zambrotta and Franceso Totti. If Totti suffers another booking, either tonight or in any prospective later games, he will suffer the dubious honour of becoming the most cautioned player in finals history.

Lippi has much confidence in his team and is hopeful of putting the sluggish performance against the USA aside. He is hoping to have Simone Perrotta available for selection after the midfielder picked up an injury against the USA. The Italian media’s praise for Lippi’s team,Toronto Maple Leafs winter classic jerseys 2014, fulsome after the opening win against Ghana, has cooled significantly in recent days. One of the main topics of debate is a lack of pace and discipline, custom soccer jerseys, soccer jerseys cheap, problems that have beset the ‘Azzurri’ at the last three major tournaments.

“All the praise that the team received for their performance might have cause some kind of easing off for my players,” admitted Lippi, who was unwittingly revealing his own shortcomings as a motivator.

“Italy has traditionally performed badly in the group stages. We are made for the knockout games as our mentality is to give our best when it is a one-off.”

Midfield playmaker Andrea Pirlo of AC Milan, hailed as Italy’s best player at the finals so far, insists that Italy will be going all out for a win this afternoon despite them only needing a draw for qualification.

“We always play to win,” Pirlo said on Wednesday, in what was a complete contradiction of his coach’s comments.

“That’s always been our approach, to walk out onto the field and play a winning game. That’s what we’ll be doing against the Czechs and we are determined to win and finish top of our group.”

Annoying Nedved
Captain Fabio Cannavaro singled out his Juventus team-mate Pavel Nedved as the main danger to his country’,Detroit Red Wings winter classic jerseys 2014;s qualification hopes this afternoon.

“Pavel is an annoying player to play against,” revealed a smiling Cannavaro on Tuesday.

Waddle's move came infor criticism from former Tiger soccer player Danny Skelton, the St. Paul's boys soccer coach who said Waddell told soccer alumni last spring their support willhelp keep the program alive and the alumni did indeed raise money for the program with a budget of $310,000.

"In retrospect," Skelton the Baltimore Sun,"it almost seems that Mr. Waddell had his mind made up well before he even met with the alumni and that our efforts were in vain, soccer jerseys cheap," he said. "I shudder to think how I will need to explain to my twosmall children years from now why the soccer program that daddy played for no longer exists. It is disgraceful. The most difficult part for me and many of my fellow alumni is the fact that the soccerprogram has had a great deal of success over the course of its history, and when compared to the success of the other programs, who, by the way, cheap soccer jerseys, are fully funded, there is no comparison at all."

The day after the announcement,Toronto Maple Leafs winter classic jerseys 2014, the Tigers went out and beat defending CAA champion Delaware, 3-2.

Towson is the second Mid-Atlantic Division I school to announce plans to dropmen's soccer next season.
